Diabetes thoughts
Jan. 18th, 2013 12:38 am1. Very good blood sugar today, even before doubling my dose of Metformin (which started today). Both my fasting reading and my post-lunch reading (which was also post-exercise) were at normal-people levels (low 100s), down from nearly 300 last week.
2. My dental hygienists (for REASONS I actually saw 2 yesterday) were so solicitous when they found out my diagnosis. One gave me a very thorough talk on "diabetes and your dental health," and the other offered to pray for me. (It's the most Christan office ever--they play Christian radio all the time, and everyone there tells me all about their church when they hear what I teach--but no one is obnoxious about it; they're all actually very sweet.)
3. Reading Dr. someone-or-other's "program to reverse diabetes today" (I am too lazy to walk across the room to get his name) and while I am sure that a low-fat vegan diet is definitely an extremely healthy option, I can't believe after all his inveighing against processed foods how many processed soy products are in the recipes! And I'm definitely not convinced that processed soy is better for you than lowfat dairy (though obviously I respect people who are choosing 100% vegan for ethical reasons). And yet, there are still more recipes in that book I'll probably try than the low-carb vegetarian cookbook I just bought, which has about 3 recipes in it that sound good to me.
4. Diet report: I had leftover lentil soup today (one of the 3 recipes), and I will say the Mediterranean spices improve after 3 days in the fridge, but I definitely have to puree some of it if I make it again; the broth is way too watery and unsatisfying. I also made, for tomorrow's breakfast, kale with tomatoes and chickpeas (yum) and a split-pea hummus with dill (good, but I'm hoping the flavors intensify by tomorrow).
