I've reached the end of The Places that Scare You, which is mostly different meditations, some of which I find helpful, others too obscure. (A few are ones she explained in the different chapters, but not all, leaving me puzzled at phrases like "seeing confusion as the four kayas is unsurpassable shunyata protection.")

I did like her dedication of any virtue to the welfare of all beings, as well as these phrases:

May the roots of suffering diminish. May warfare, violence, neglect, and addictions also decrease.
May the wisdom and compassion of all beings increase, now and in the future.
May we continue to open our hears and minds, in order to work ceaselessly for the benefit of all beings.
May we go to the places that scare us.

Also the meditations on loving kindness and compassion. For each of these you start with yourself, then a very dear person, a friend, a neutral person, a person you find difficult, then all beings: May [this person} enjoy happiness and the root of happiness. May [this person} be free of suffering and the root of suffering.

I have several more Pema Chodron books, and her chapters are short, so I will probably turn to one of them next. I think perhaps the one that is more beginning Buddhism, since I was thinking of sending The Places that scare you to a friend who is trying meditation to overcome anxiety, but I think it already assumes a lot of background knowledge of Buddhism and Buddhist terminology.
